Hi Jan,

I am surprised in seeing so many "obviously" in your message.

Obviously, there is an explanation to all this.  And, obviously, you 
haven't had a look at the last entry in the status page 
(http://www.netkit.org/status.html).
Knowing that you are using Ubuntu indeed affects the diagnosis, as it is 
already known that there are issues with the latest releases of this 
distribution. Possible fixes are also suggested on the same page 
(http://www.netkit.org/status.html). That is likely to be your problem. 
If not, let us know.
