Are you using the latest Ubuntu distribution (Edgy, 6.10)? If you are 
using it, you can notice that default shell is dash (/bin/sh is a link 
to /bin/dash). They chosen this to speed up start scripts and many many 
other things etc etc etc (I'm not an Ubuntu developer........)..
You can change that link to set as default shell bash, or you can change 
all the netkit scripts' first line from #!/bin/sh to #!/bin/bash. I have 
done this on my ubuntu installation.
source is not a POSIX compliant command, it's bash related, so in dash 
won't work......
