Dear Emisca,

in order to get all the error messages issued during the startup of a 
virtual machine, you can use the following syntax:
vstart pc --con0=this --verbose

Notice that this attaches the virtual machine terminal to your current 
console. Therefore, once you get the virtual machine prompt, the only 
way to get out of it is either to type "halt" on this prompt or to issue 
a vcrash from some other console.
Anyway, this should not be a problem since you are reporting a failure 
in the vm startup :)

About compiling a new kernel, consider that the patches that should be 
applied can be found in kernel/patches under the Netkit installation 
directory. About the sources, you can simply get a vanilla kernel from 
http://www.kernel.org and compile it by following the instructions 
provided in the man page netkit-kernel.
