Unfortunately there's a problem with Netkit on Fedora Core 4:
when I type 'vstart pc1' an xterm appears for a while and then suddenly
dies. Here's the output of the command:
[code]
[ice a vega ~]$ vstart pc1
============= Starting virtual machine "pc1" =============
Kernel: /opt/netkit2/kernel/netkit-kernel
Modules: /opt/netkit2/kernel/modules
Memory: 8 MB
Model fs: /opt/netkit2/fs/netkit-fs
Filesystem: /home/ice/pc1.disk (new)
Hostfs at: /home/ice
Running ==> /opt/netkit2/kernel/netkit-kernel
modules=/opt/netkit2/kernel/modules name=pc1 title=pc1 umid=pc1 mem=12M
ubd0=/home/ice/pc1.disk,/opt/netkit2/fs/netkit-fs root=98:1
uml_dir=/home/ice/.netkit/mconsole hosthome=/home/ice quiet con0=xterm
con1=null
[ice a vega ~]$
[/code]
I tried to change the netkit.conf file, setting 'TERM_TYPE=gnome' instead of
'xterm': the result is that the virtual machine gets created but no
terminals appear:
[code]
[ice a vega ~]$ vstart pc1
============= Starting virtual machine "pc1" =============
Kernel: /opt/netkit2/kernel/netkit-kernel
Modules: /opt/netkit2/kernel/modules
Memory: 8 MB
Model fs: /opt/netkit2/fs/netkit-fs
Filesystem: /home/ice/pc1.disk
Hostfs at: /home/ice
Running ==> /opt/netkit2/kernel/netkit-kernel
modules=/opt/netkit2/kernel/modules name=pc1 title=pc1 umid=pc1 mem=12M
ubd0=/home/ice/pc1.disk,/opt/netkit2/fs/netkit-fs root=98:1
uml_dir=/home/ice/.netkit/mconsole hosthome=/home/ice quiet con0=xterm
con1=null xterm=gnome-terminal,-t,-e
[ice a vega ~]$ vlist
USER VHOST PID UPTIME SIZE INTERFACES
ice pc1 2913 00:09 12512
Total virtual machines: 1 (you), 1 (all users).
Total consumed memory: 12512 KB (you), 12512 KB (all users).
[ice a vega ~]$
[/code]
Finally, when I try to shut down the machine, here's what happens:
[code]
[ice a vega ~]$ vhalt pc1
Halting virtual machine "pc1" (PID 2913) owned by ice [....................]
vhalt: could not shut down virtual machine "pc1".
[ice a vega ~]$
[/code]
While, instead, the crash seems to work:
[code]
[ice a vega ~]$ vcrash pc1
============= Crashing virtual machine "pc1" (PID 2913) =========
Virtual machine owner: ice
Virtual machine mconsole socket: /home/ice/.netkit/mconsole/pc1/mconsole
Crashing... done.
[ice a vega ~]$
[/code]
I'm running Netkit on a Fedora Core 4 updated to the latest version, kernel
2.6.13-1.1526_FC4 with a 16K stack option. The configuration script says
everything is ok and set properly, and that I have both xterm and
gnome-terminal. I hope this helps.
