The GDCC Wants You!
The Graph Drawing Contest with its first occurrence 1994 is about as old as the Graph Drawing & Network Visualization conference itself. It has run annually since, to promote new creative designs to show graph-based data and research into algorithms engineering for drawing graphs, but also as a social activity at the conference itself to engage with manually solving challenging instances. See http://mozart.diei.unipg.it/gdcontest/ for more information and a history of the contest.
The contest committee is looking for new members to bolster its ranks for the coming years. In the current setup, this involves the following activities:
* Creative topics
* Select a topic every year, by finding interesting, real, graph-based datasets to be visualized.
* Prepare the datasets for distribution
* Evaluate submissions before the conference
* Live challenge
* Select a topic every other year, by defining a (usually known, hard) optimization problem regarding graph drawing
* Prepare the contest instances, manual solving tool, submission server
* Enjoy teams struggling to find the perfect solution to that one instance
* General
* Promote the graph drawing contest, maintain the website, etc.
* Announce winners at the conference banquet
* Think about how the contest may evolve in the future
The ideal* candidate contributes to all these activities, takes initiatives for new ideas and topics, always attends the conference, and can serve on the committee for approximately four years. *of course, no one is perfect!
If you are interested in helping us run this tradition at our conference, please send us an email at gdnvcontest at gmail.com<mailto:gdnvcontest at gmail.com> with a brief motivation.
Deadline for applications is October 5th.
We are looking forward to your application!
Best regards,
The GD contest committee
