PhD position on Algorithms for Network Visualization at Utrecht University
The goal of the PhD thesis is to advance the state-of-the-art in network
visualization algorithms. On the one hand, the aim is to develop network
quality metrics that closely match the human perception of aesthetics,
readability, and clarity of node-link diagrams. On the other hand, the
goal is to develop algorithms that construct node-link diagrams by
optimizing the newly developed quality metrics.
Network visualization is a research field lying in the intersection of
multiple research areas such as: algorithm design, graph theory,
computational geometry, information visualization, visual perception and
cognition. Candidates having background in these areas are highly
welcomed to apply. Knowledge in one of the following areas will be
considered an advantage: machine learning, experimental evaluation of
algorithms, empirical evaluation of visualization methods, network
information theory.
As a PhD candidate in this fully funded 5-year project, you will
primarily perform research and publish your results in scientific papers
in international conferences and journals, and complete a PhD thesis.
You will also contribute to teaching by supervising tutorial groups and
student projects and by co-teaching courses at the Bachelor's and
Master's level (30% of employment time). This may lead to a University
Teaching Qualification certificate.
The PhD position will be supervised by Tamara Mchedlidze (daily
supervisor) and Alexandru Telea (thesis promotor). The PhD candidate
will be part of the Visualization and Graphics (VIG) group of the
Department of Information and Computing Sciences of the Utrecht University.

Please notice that there are other two PhD positions available at the
Visualization and Graphics group within general field of Information
Visualization.
